UNH to end educational activity art in Lyme; Lyme Academy may revert to not-degree-granting art academy

WEST Haven — University of New Oasis volition cease degree-granting programming at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in May 2019 and movement its Bachelor of Fine Arts in Analogy program dorsum to the West Haven campus, the university's lath of governors announced Monday.

"In the coming months, the university and the Lyme Academy Board of Trustees volition talk over the conversion of the campus back to its original use as a non-degree-granting art academy," the university said in a news release.

University of New Haven and the Lyme Academy lath volition launch a "Lyme Transition Job Strength" to consider future pathways for Lyme Academy students and customs members, and "examine options for students in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture," the release said.

The relocation of the illustration plan at present taught at Lyme will exist effective in the fall of 2019, the release said.

Two potential options for students enrolled when current programs cease in May, 2019 have been identified and then far, the relase said. They include:

Switching to a different art or design major offered at the West Haven campus, or,

Standing in those disciplines through an articulation understanding with the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford.

"In the decade leading up to the showtime of the partnership between the Academy of New Haven and Lyme in 2014, Lyme was facing meaning challenges, falling curt of its enrollment targets and struggling to maintain its fiscal viability and its vital accreditation," said UNH President Steven H. Kaplan.

"We recognized that we were taking a calculated chance," Kaplan said in the release. "Nevertheless, we were confident that we could brand a difference, believing that a significant investment of university resource, funds and expertise, in conjunction with Lyme's highly respected programs and reputation, would enable united states of america to significantly increase enrollment and create a foundation for enduring success that would benefit all of our students.

"Candidly, with the benefit of hindsight, that determination was made more with our hearts than our heads," Kaplan said. "We worried more well-nigh supporting important educational needs and not enough about the market demand for a very small, rural fine art higher. Continuing to do and then would merely be irresponsible."

Nationally, nearly all disciplines in the arts saw a driblet in the number of degrees awarded from 2012, the recent enrollment peak, to 2015, according to research from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the release said.

At its primary campus, however, UNH has seen success and growth over the final decade, including enrolling the two largest classes in its nearly 100-year history in 2017 and 2018, it said.

"Regardless of these challenges facing the Lyme campus, our commitment to our Lyme students is unwavering, and we volition practice everything we can to ensure their future success," Kaplan said. "I look frontward to hearing our students' ideas on how we can work together to create individualized plans that will ensure their success in achieving their educational goals."

Lyme students who opt to proceed their education on the West Oasis campus will benefit from a diversity of programs and services bachelor at that place, including five diverse academic colleges and schools, more 170 student clubs, varsity and intramural athletics, and living-learning residential communities, including those specifically geared for students in the arts, the release said.

UNH also offers an immersive art experience during specialized study away semesters at the university's Tuscany campus in Prato, Italian republic, information technology said.

The university plans to increment its offerings on the chief campus, including programs in digital art and blueprint, animation, gaming, and virtual and augmented reality that volition complement its program in illustration.

"Analogy offers great synergy with our current and projected program offerings on our West Oasis campus," said Daniel May, senior vice president and provost. "We're excited to exist calculation this degree programme to our expanding portfolio in the arts, including B.F.A. degrees in Graphic Design, Interior Design and Pre-Architecture, too equally our B.A. in Fine art.
