"Tubthumping" is a vocal released by British stone band Chumbawamba from their eighth studio album, Tubthumper (1997). Information technology is the band's most successful single, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart. It topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and hitting number six on the U.s. Billboard Hot 100[1] (although it topped the US Mod Rock and Mainstream Top xl charts). At the 1998 Brit Awards, "Tubthumping" was nominated for the Brit Laurels for Best British Single. It sold 880,000 copies in the UK.[2]
Background [edit]
The vocal was the grouping'south lead single from Tubthumper, their major-characterization debut.[3] It was released on 11 August 1997.[4] [5] Vocalist Dunstan Bruce retrospectively observed that, earlier the group wrote it, they "were in a mess: we had become directionless and disparate". He credited "Tubthumping" with changing that, telling The Guardian, "It'due south non our most political or best song, but it brought united states of america back together. The song is about u.s.a. – as a grade and equally a band. The beauty of it was we had no idea how big it would exist."[half-dozen]
Writing and composition [edit]
A Leeds pub called the Fforde Grene served as the group's inspiration for the song; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that it was written nigh "the resilience of ordinary people";[vi] musically, "Tubthumping" is a trip the light fantastic toe-rock, alternative stone, and dance-punk song in D major.[seven] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Critical reception [edit]
Larry Moving picture from Billboard wrote, "Some records just need attention: 'Tubthumping' is 1 of the rare few. You can spend 3 times the track's running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and contrasted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-rock guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-way horns. Holding information technology all together are the kind of rousing, gang-like chants that yous hear at football game games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, yous won't soon forget this jam afterwards first listen. And yous'll likely be hearing it on pop and modern rock stations for months to come. If this gem is indicative of the tone of the act's forthcoming album, information technology should be quite a caput trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described it as an "irritating tricky drinking canticle from the anarchist band".[thirteen] It was also called a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "After a decade and a half spent as indie heroes this collective is likely to break into the mainstream in a big way".[15] Ian Hyland of the Sun Mirror rated it viii out of ten, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-upwardly human pyramids on the dance flooring in seconds. And you lot'll have a monster hit – good work, chum."[sixteen] Troy J. Augusto from Variety declared it every bit a "drinking-and-dancing anthem" and "the quirk striking of the season".[17]
In The Village Vox'south Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the second-best unmarried of the year.[18] Australian radio station Triple J ranked it No. 3 in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the same yr.[19] Author Bruce Pollock included information technology in his 2005 volume "The vii,500 Most Of import Songs of 1944-2000".[xx] "Tubthumping" also placed at No. 12 in Rolling Stone 's 2007 list of the "20 Nigh Annoying Songs"[21] and at No. eight in the magazine'southward 2011 listing of the "Top 10 I-Hitting Wonders of All Time".[22]
